Death Valley Campo-Velo

Winter had arrived in the Big Valley and it was time to head to warmer climes.

In early December, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Herb Lee, Mike Broderick and I made the long drive to Death Valley seeking warm temperatures and sunshine.

We timed the trip perfectly. With rain and temperatures in Sacramento in the low 60's, we arrived in Death Valley where day-time temps were in the 80's and the skies blue. The locals said the temperatures were at least 10 degrees warmer than normal.

Over four days, we rode our Bike Fridays - 2 days riding to Artist Palette and Dante's Peak. The other 2 days, we hiked Golden Canyon and Mosaic Canyon.  All destinations were incredibly spectacular and can be described as almost other-worldly.

I took my tear-drop trailer, endearly named "Musubi", which translates to rice-ball in Japanese, and camped at the Furnace Creek Campground. It was fabulous camping with the Milky Way washing across the night-time skies.

These short getaways are called "Campo-Velos" since camping and biking are the primary reasons for the trip.
